In 2011 the UK's safety organisations convened in
Birmingham at the Access Industry Forum's Knowledge Base to tackle the issue in
a collaborative manner. The energy and determination to accelerate and achieve
the goal of no more working at height accidents ever was inspired by the moving
presentation from Jason Anker, who was himself a victim of a fall from height.

AIF
Knowledge Base
The role of the Access
Industry Forum (AIF), and its contribution to safety and best
practice when working at height, continues to grow. A forum
for all the principal trade associations and federations
involved in this specialist sector, it has succeeded in
attracting an impressive line up of speakers for what promises
to be its most thought provoking and informative Knowledge
Base ever.
Although there
is a steady decline in the number of injuries caused by falls;
falls from height remain the most common kind of workplace
injury and fatality. Safety when working at height is
essential, and making sure that people use the correct access
equipment properly is a key part of this.
Someone who knows this only
too well is Jason Anker, which is why Jason - a motivational
and behavioural safety speaker - will deliver the a
stimulating presentation in the Knowledge Base each day.
Paralysed from the waist down following an avoidable accident
while working at height on a building site, he has been
described as a powerful and persuasive speaker whose story and
message can mesmerise an audience. Not to be missed.
Certainly not to be missed,
and a genuine highlight of not only the Knowledge Base but the
Expo itself, is the ground breaking panel discussion scheduled
for 12 noon on the Wednesday. Nigel Bryson OBE for the British
Safety Council; Barry Holt, director of policy and research at
IIRSM; Roger Bibbings MBE on behalf of RoSPA and John Holden,
immediate past president of IOSH, will join Nick Johnson from
HSE and Peter Bennett from the Forum to discuss and debate
‘How to achieve the Holy Grail - no more working at height
accidents, ever!’
Other
Knowledge Base highlights will include the panel discussion
‘Design v Cost v Safety’ featuring representatives from the
Forum, the Association for Project Safety (APS), the Royal
Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Royal Institute
of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and ‘Maintaining effective work
at height policies in a touch economic climate’ with the
British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF), the Chartered
Institute of Building (CIOB) and the UK Contractors Group (UKCG).
There is increasing emphasis
and focus at the design stage of a project to consider methods of working
at height - not only during the construction process itself,
but also throughout the working life of the project. But do
working at height considerations so early in the process
hinder creative flair and, if so, can there be a happy
compromise? ‘Design vs. Cost vs. Safety’ will address this
important issue, while ‘Maintaining effective working at
height policies’ will examine the ways in which companies can
successfully balance the imperative for safety with the need
to contain and, in many cases, reduce costs.
Making
a welcome return to the Knowledge Base
will be the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).
A regular contributor to AIF events - represented on this
occasion by Nick Johnson, a senior policy advisor in the
Slips, Trips and Falls Team at Bootle - HSE will discuss falls
from height trends across different sectors; the factors that
contribute to these incidents; give guidance on managing the
risks, and spotlight some of the initiatives that HSE is
currently working on to support duty holders in their risk
management.
Alongside these keynote
sessions, member organisations of the Forum will talk about
the latest developments in their respective specialisations.
PASMA, the trade association representing the mobile access
tower industry, will explain the findings of its year-long
review into fall protection methods, and the Ladder
Association will make clear the continuing role and relevance
of ladders and stepladders in the workplace and the growing
recognition for the need for professional ladder training.
IPAF will describe how to choose the right MEWP for the job,
and NASC will discuss “Latest developments in scaffolding
guidance including SG4:10 and the new TG20:08 Interactive
Guide”.
AIF
Demonstration Area
Back in a new format is the AIF
Demonstration Area where visitors will be able to see practical
demonstrations of the latest access equipment ranging from ladders
and towers to powered access.
Making its debut at the Expo
will be edge protection equipment supplied via the Edge Protection
Federation (EPF) - the latest member of the Forum and, as always,
representatives of the Access Industry Forum will be on hand to
answer questions in the Working at Height Information Centre.

The AIF
The AIF comprises the nine leading 'working at
height' associations in the UK and represents all sectors of the
industry.

All of these associations
are ‘standards-led’ and independently managed without any direct
affiliation to any product manufacturer or supplier. This ensures
that the guidance, advice and regulations that these organisations
present are objective and promote ultimate best, safe practice.

Hero or villain? Where next for
ladders and stepladders?
Jason Anker
was paralysed from the waist down due to an avoidable
incident while working at height. For many years he has been
unable to talk openly about his experience. This is
reflected in a story that is very raw; the emotion in which
he delivers his talk is as strong as if it was the day of
the incident. His story has a powerful impact and grabs the
attention of those listening, from Directors, Managers,
Supervisors and Operatives alike.

Safety professionals need to ensure they achieve as much
'bang for their buck' on any policy they manage and still
attempt to improve safety. Work at height still needs to be
safe and ideally incidents and accidents continue to reduce.
A tough ask in this current economic climate. Hear from some
of the industries key organisations on how to successfully
balance these demands.
